Travels : New Delhi [India] – Part I

without comments

Despite India being a third world country, New Delhi is actually very modern and high tech.  When we first arrived at the airport, buildings nearby were architecturally very advanced.  The area is known as “Silicone Valley”, as all the major corporations are amongst the area ie. IBM, AirTel, Deloitte, etc. We only stayed one week, but got to venture into the markets at Karol Bagh and Rajgiv Chowk, where you can score some awesome deals! Local malls like Ambience, DLF, Select City Walk and MGF Metropolitan were very grand and nice to walk through.  The subway line is called the Delhi Metro, which was easy and inexpensive to get around town.  Travel by auto rickshaws are a must, but make sure you wear a scarf around your face as the air is very dusty.  Traffic is crazy — honking is non-stop as that is how they signal or warn others out of the way. Good luck crossing the street — go at your own risk! I wasn’t too adventurous with the food, mostly ate at familiar food chains or at the mall.  But I still got sick by the end of week unfortunately, which is really common amongst new travellers to India — our immune systems can’t handle it!  We stayed at the Imperial Place Hotel, which was a newer hotel — very clean and staff was extremely nice and helpful.  India has an odd mix where people are either really rich (driving Bentleys) or really poor (shoe shining for 40 rupees).  India was definitely an eye opener to a whole different culture — it was an amazing and unforgettable experience.  Special thanks to Garima for taking care of me on this trip and showing me around!
