Giving Back : Hope And the City 2011

October 28th, 2011 — 05:10 am

The Canadian Cancer Society on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Angus Glen Golf Club and Conference Centre held their 2nd Annual Hope and the City – a fabulous “girls night out” for you and your girlfriends.

This exciting fundraiser supports women’s cancer research including breast, cervical, ovarian, and uterine. It celebrates hope and the beauty of being a woman. It was an evening of getting pampered, feeling great and celebrating LIFE!

Myself and many other vendors including cake shops, massage therapists, mehndi artists, etc had booths either for pampering, beauty or fun! I participated in the pampering stations where we gave free makeovers to ladies that generously donated. 100% proceeds went to the charity.  It was a ton of fun and all for a great cause.

For information, please visit : Hope And the City

Some of the vendors included:
Makeup Pampering Station : Maggie Ng
Makeup Pampering Station : Vanessa Funtera – 416 816 7428
Hair Pampering Station : Ming Justin Cheung [Puzzle Creations]
Cake Table : The Sweetest Thing Ltd
Nutritionist : Louise McGill RHN, PTS
Mehndi : Fresh Inc Mehndi
Mehndi : Reena – 416 809 1713
Venue : Angus Glen Golf Club
Photobooth : Footprint Studios
And the list goes on….

Look Good Feel Better

September 24th, 2011 — 10:16 am

Look Good Feel Better is a program that holds free makeup workshops for cancer patients.  Women with cancer tend to lose their hair, eyebrows, eyelashes due to chemotherapy — so it was our job to help teach them how to apply makeup which empowers them and helps to regain confidence in their appearance.  I used to volunteer once a month helping out with these workshops, but as my schedule became more hectic, I’ve decided to donate money instead:

September 26, 2011 – donated $50
January 20, 2010 – donated $80
April 12, 2009 – donated $100
July 26, 2008 – donated $80

Giving Back : End Cancer Weekend

May 30th, 2011 — 08:21 am

Giving Back : Matt + Holly
Last year, Holly (my past bridal client from Joee Wong’s Big Give a couple of years ago) walked 60km in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancer with her Maid of Honour, Andrea, and her team, the Cougars Conquering Cancer.  Their small but mighty team of 12 walkers raised over $36,000 last year!

What did they do with it? They didn’t want to just throw the money into the “pot”, so they approached the foundation and asked if they could divert their funds raised to actually buy something for a hospital that was in need.  One of the Cougars is a nurse at a rural hospital – the Deep River & District Hospital.
The hospital did not have a digital mammography machine. So the Cougars bought them one.

This means that mammogram images can be captured digitally and emails to the pathologist for interpretation (usually in distant, larger city centres), instead of having to physically mail the exposed films away.  They have directly impacted the care of the residents of the hospital’s catchment area to decrease the wait times for diagnosis of their patients.

The $20 Challenge

They will be walking again this year.  THIS WEEKEND, June 4th and 5th, 2011.
This year, Holly has issued a $20 challenge to her friends, family and work colleagues.  If everyone chipped in $20, they could continue to make a huge positive impact on the access to care and research needed to defeat cancer once and for all.

If you would like to support Holly for the walk this weekend, (I certainly did), you can click on the link below and then click “DONATE ONLINE“.

Donation : Pantene Beautiful Lengths

January 6th, 2011 — 08:05 am

Originally I was inspired by a random act of kindness I saw another makeup artist do. She had super long hair and decided to shave it all off – donating it to make wigs for cancer patients. Before that, I never grew my hair long. I usually only kept it at shoulder-length, but I thought “Hey, maybe I’ll give it try.” I wanted to do something good, that would help make a difference (in a small way).

Donation : Pantene Beautiful LengthsMaggie’s Pantene Beautiful Lengths Donation 2011

I was definitely not brave enough to shave my head…but I did manage to grow about 9-10 inches of hair to donate to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths – a cause that makes real hair wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments. My hair is now about chin-length and I plan on trying to regrow it for another donation. I guess it’s just one of the ways for me to give back to the community. Cheers and happy hair-growing everyone!

Big Give 2010 : Heather + Andrew

December 9th, 2010 — 04:55 pm

So good ol’ JW (Joee Wong) — wedding photographer extraordinaire sets out his Big Give project for 2010. Big Give is where he finds a deserving couple to donate his wonderful services FREE with no catch.  After numerous submissions — many which were fabricated BTW…he finally chose a winner for 2010:  Heather  + Andrew.

They have an amazing story about how they met, how they are in love and about to tie the knot.  Despite Andrew’s Mom having colon cancer, everyone in the family made the most of their time together…and even though she is no longer with us today, H+A wants to be able to just celebrate LIFE together.  With their modest budget (being students + freshly out of school), it was H+A’s honour to have JW make their day just that bit more special.

Having been on board for last year’s Big Give Team…it was an amazing experience and this year, the same opportunity knocked on my door…so it was my honour to also donate some of my services to Heather + Andrew along side of JW…as part of his “Dream Team”!

I had a chance to converse with Heather via email and she’s very sweet and extremely humble and grateful. In person, she’s very bubbly and has a very positive and high energy about her!  Due to another booking on my end, I couldn’t make it for the morning session, so I ended up doing Heather’s semi-permanent lash extensions (a few days b4) and went to the reception the wedding day of to do an evening makeup touchup for the entire bridal party.

Charity : Centre For Dreams 101010

December 9th, 2010 — 04:32 am

I just made a donation to the Centre For Dreams 101010 Campaign and thought I would help spread the word.

A good friend/hairstylist colleague of mine works for this organization. This organization  is a day program dedicated to providing a curriculum designed specifically for adults with intellectual challenges. They provide these special individuals with educational programs and social skills training with the hopes of integrating them into the community – both independently and confidently.  Unfortunately they are being kicked out of their current building and need funds to make the transition into a new one.

Thanks for all your help!

Hope For Haiti – Beauty Benefit Fundraiser (Part 1)

December 2nd, 2010 — 08:27 am

Hope For Haiti

This fundraiser started off with an email from fellow colleague/MUA Rhia Amio…she wanted to organize something for the Haiti disaster.  Within two weeks, many industry pros jumped on board for this good cause, including myself.  We have a ton of volunteers and sponsors combining forces to make this a huge success.  All proceeds are going to the Canadian Red Cross…and since we are donating b4 Feb 12th, the Canadian gov’t will match all donations. We have a maximum capacity for 50 participants — which all spots have already been filled!

For myself, I will be donating my time/skills as Makeup Expert giving tips and demos to participants.  As well, I will be donating $25 to Canadian Red Cross.  And it doesn’t stop there! I also sponsored this event by donating $25 Vouchers for “Xtreme Lashes Semi-Permanent Lash Extensions by Maggie Ng” to all 50 participants and One Grand Prize of a “Free Full Application of XL Lash Extensions” for the raffle draw.

Here are some details about the event:

When: Sunday, February 7th, 2010
Time: 11:00AM – 4:00PM
Ticket Price: a minimum $25 donation to be collected at the door (cash only). Participants will be asked to submit their contact information so that a tax receipt can be issued. All donations and money raised from raffles will go towards the RED CROSS.

More details:
The Hope for Haiti Benefit will feature Toronto beauty pros donating make-up and hair services to raise money for Haiti. Participants are asked for a minimum donation of $25 for an afternoon of beauty services, hors d’oeuvres and fun!

Services include the following beauty stations:
1. Eyebrow Know-How: Have your brows professionally tweezed, and learn how to fill them in properly.
2. Mini Mani: Polish off your look with the latest colours in nail trends.
3. Smoky Eye Make-over: Once you’re done at this beauty station, you’ll be looking for somewhere to go on Sunday night! :)
4. Hair: Learn tips and tricks on how to make-over your hair, without cutting it!
5. Before and After Photobooth: perfect for updating your FB photos!

All participants will receive “Goodie Beauty Bags” and there will also be beauty prizes up for raffle!

Hope For Haiti – Beauty Benefit Fundraiser (Part 2)

December 2nd, 2010 — 08:08 am

Wowza…if you’ve read the first blog entry about the Hope For Haiti – Beauty Benefit, this is the post entry.  Organized by Rhia Amio and tons of help from Joy David-Tilberg, can I just say — it was a totally awesome event! It was sooo much fun…was great to connect with other makeup artists, photographers and best yet…with a big group of fabulous ladies who all came out for makeovers and a great cause!

Hope For HaitiThroughout the event, there were snacks and yummy cupcakes by So Into Cupcakes.  While people waited for their makeup to be done, they got their hair done. Photographers were doing their thing with b4/after photos.  So as I mentioned in my previous post, I participated by donating my time/services as Beauty Expert and did makeovers for approximately 5-6 ladies.  Here are a few b4/after photos:h4h_b4after_01
hope4haiti02_resized
hope4haiti_resized
patricial-1_h4h_resized
yuri_resizedI also donated $25 to the Canadian Red Cross.  Myself, as well as everyone else who donated got a really cool goodie bag filled with over $100 worth of gifts from our generous sponsors listed below:
Hope For Haiti Gift BagNot to mention, I also donated $25 Vouchers for Xtreme Lashes Eyelash Extensions by Maggie Ng to all 50 participants.  Everyone was so excited about it b/c lots of people have heard about it but never tried it before…and guess what?…I already have someone booked for their first lash extension application!

Furthermore, I donated One FREE Full Application of Xtreme Lashes by Maggie Ng for the raffle draw.  Congrats goes out to Sharon D who was the winner of my donation!

Come to think of it, if you combine all makeup services, my monetary donation, prize donation and total sponsorship vouchers, you can pretty much say I donated over $1500 worth of money/service/gifts for this great cause.  And that’s just me by myself.  When you include everyone else, I can’t even fathom what the total is.  Just got word from Rhia that we raised $2,354 in cash…multiply that by 2 since Canadian Gov’t will be matching donations b4 Feb 12…so that’s $4,708…100% going to Canadian Red Cross.  Not too shabby for a group of beauty divas!

Check out what one of the participants sent to me immediately after the event:
hope4haiti - patriciaIt’s reasons like this makes me glad to do what I do.

Special thanks goes out to all volunteers, organizers, sponsors and participants for coming out.  I think together we can make a difference, slowly but surely.  Stay tuned for future events by adding yourself as a Fan to my Facebook page by “clicking here”! We’re thinking of making this an annual event.
