Food Review : The Edmund Burke

The Edmund Burke is a pub in the Riverdale area, near Broadview & Danforth. It was named after the architect behind the iconic Bloor Viaduct nearby. I often don’t frequent the area, but I just so happened to have gotten an invite to watch an Aimee Mann concert at the Danforth Music Hall. I was mega hungry and hadn’t eaten dinner yet, so we scoped the area looking for a place to eat. It was either McDonald’s or Pizza Pizza. I honestly didn’t really want fast food, but also didn’t want to spend a bajillion dollars for a meal, so The Edmund Burke seemed like the best choice for something in between.

I ordered the Classic Reuben Sandwich ($15 CAD), which contained tender corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing (the latter two house-made) on rye, with a couple of pickles on the side. It also came with either herbed thick-cut fries or mixed green salad. I was trying to be healthy, so I went with the salad. =)

My friend had a heavy lunch, so he went with the Beet Salad for dinner ($14 CAD), with arugula, walnuts and goat cheese, paired with a red wine shallot dressing.

I can’t really comment on the Beet Salad, since I didn’t get to try it personally, but my friend said it tasted good and was really fresh. The guy who served us also recommended this salad over the other salads that were available on their menu.

As for my Reuben sandwich, it was quite good to my surprise! The food was freshly made and the service was also quick and friendly. From the outside, I didn’t think much of the restaurant. But when you go in, it has a cozy, comfortable feel to it, with decent tasting food! Overall, definitely a great place to chill pre- or post-concert.

Unfortunately I’m not really a beer person, but I’m sure their ale is good (from what I heard). I would however, be interested to go back and try something else on their menu! Maybe the weekend brunch?

If you’ve dined here before, what did you think of The Edmund Burke?
